A number of Manchester United supporters have vented their frustrations over the decision to award new signing Edinson Cavani the number seven shirt.
Cavani’s move to Manchester United was confirmed late on transfer deadline, with the Uruguayan arriving on a free transfer following his departure from PSG. The 33-year-old has been brought in to provide cover for Anthony Martial and to offer more of an impact than Odion Ighalo off the bench.
United announced on Tuesday evening that Cavani will be given the club’s iconic number seven shirt. A number that has previously been worn by the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, more recent occupiers of the shirt have been less successful than their predecessors, with all of Alexis Sanchez, Memphis Depay and Angel Di Maria struggling to perform at Old Trafford.

Rarely at a club does a shirt number hold so much significance, but at United the number seven shirt is seen as something of an honour. Cavani will have to perform when he is given the chance to prove doubters wrong and show he can handle the weight of expectations.
A lot of Manchester United fans have doubted whether the 33-year-old forward has the ability anymore to perform in the number seven shirt, with some suggesting this could be a repeat of the other players to have worn the number over recent years.
Here are just some of the comments that were made by United fans on social media.
This is not an attack on Cavani, but it’s a disgrace to the legends that wore it before him, as are several of those that have been given this privilege. Just another bad decision made by those in charge.

As much as im excited seeing Cavani at United and I think it will be a great move I really don’t think that the number 7 should be given to a 33 year old stop gap. The number 7 is getting dragged through the mud at the minute. #MUFC #Savethe7

The club finds new ways to disappoint me….— Joydeep (@joyydeeeep) October 6, 2020
Make us eat our words and prove it that you’re worth it. This is a prestigious shirt!

Throwing the 7 shirt around to anyone these days, the club is a mess from top to bottom

I swear i want Cavani to be successful and hopefully be an inspiration to the younger forwards in our team but thats a head scratcher. Hopefully its an impact like Cantona rather than Sanchez 😬
