Manchester United: Fans gush over Chris Smalling as transfer news emerges

Smalling

Manchester United ace Chris Smalling is set to return to Old Trafford next month as his loan will not allow him to play in the Europa League for AS Roma.

Smalling, 30, has spent the past season on loan at Roma, impressing Paulo Foncesca during his time at the Stadio Olimpico.

According to The Telegraph’s James Ducker, as per @utdreport, he will wait for clarity from his parent club over his future at the Theatre of Dreams before deciding the next step for his career.

The veteran played 28 games in Serie A, scoring two goals, supplying two assists, completing two interceptions and over four clearances per game (via WhoScored).

Who should Man United sell?

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire has come under fire for his performances this season. The club captain copped a fair amount of criticism from Red Devils legend Roy Keane after making a string of errors during the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Unsurprisingly, loads of United fans gushed over the “colossus” as the transfer news broke on social media, with several supporters tweeting the “class” defender is “better than Maguire.” However, it is worth pointing out Maguire has actually earned a higher WhoScored rating than his teammate at the time of writing.

He would still make a decent backup CB imo instead of Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe, simply because how injury prone they are.

Keep him and sell Phil Jones 2.0

You can’t leave England for Italy and not be class. Keep him though. Sell Jones.

He’s been a colossus for Roma. Could be a class backup for Lindelof, veteran with bags of experience t boot.

— Mohawk Watch (@mohawkwatch) July 28, 2020

I think we should give him priority over Eric Bailly and Lindlof both, he had one very good season under LVG

— Haider Ali (@alihaider907) July 27, 2020

Good. Way better than Maguire but this fanbase isn’t ready for that conversation.

We should first get a good replacement before letting him go! I just like how he plays with aggression which is absolutely necessary in any defence. He got something important we’re lacking in our defence, Good aerial clearance and the goalscoring ability

United fans, should Woodward sell Smalling in the summer? Let us know down below!
