Manchester United: Fans gutted over Real Madrid joining race to sign van de Beek

According to a report from Dutch newspaper AD via the Daily Express, Manchester United have accepted that La Liga giants Real Madrid are the ‘frontrunners’ to sign Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek – prompting some Red Devils supporters to panic over potentially missing out on the player’s signature.

The Dutchman, who has so far amassed six goals and four assists in the Eredivisie this campaign as per WhoScored.com, is reportedly unwilling to leave the Dutch outfit until next summer. Regardless, according to a report from ESPN, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could still be weighing up a move for the midfielder in January. The Red Devils have reportedly been on the hunt for an attacking midfielder to boost their creativity in the centre of the park, with van de Beek emerging as a prime target.

Compared to United’s current crop of creative midfield players, most notably Fred and Jesse Lingard, the 22-year-old’s league pass success rate (83%) has paled in comparison to that of his potential future teammates. Both Fred and Lingard have amassed 87.8% and 87% pass accuracy stats respectively, even if they haven’t amounted nearly as many goals and assists in that time. With that in mind, Red Devils fans have not been too optimistic over potentially missing out on the Dutchman and here’s what some of them had to say on Twitter.
