Manchester United fans have reacted to Victor Lindelof winning the Swedish Player of the Year award for 2018 on Monday evening. The defender became the first player other than Zlatan Ibrahimovic to win the prestigious award in 11 years.
Lindelof has been a standout performer for José Mourinho’s team this season in what has been a difficult and sloppy start to their campaign, especially defensively. The 24-year-old has started 13 times in all competitions since August which shows the clear trust and confidence the manager has in him. Given the current state of the other United defenders, the team has been highly reliant on Lindelof’s performances, especially in recent weeks where the Red Devils managed to get some good results, most notably the 2-1 win over Juventus in Turin last week.
Lindelof made the move from Benfica to United in the summer of last year and has slowly cemented his place as a first-choice option under Mourinho. The club’s fans have now called on the ownership to give him a recognised and solid defensive partner with Chirs Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly not being seen as their solution.
