Many Manchester United fans have been drooling over an iconic goal from Wayne Rooney, as Friday marked 15 years to the day since his incredible effort against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.Â
It is fair to say Rooney has scored plenty of screamers throughout his decorated career so far, and it is one of the most eye-catching examples that has left fans gushing over his heroics on social media.
The club’s official Twitter account uploaded a video of the Englishman’s volley in the Premier League tie at home to the Magpies, a strike that triggered a remarkable comeback from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. After directing an angry tirade at Neale Barry, Rooney pounced on a mistake by Peter Rampage, and unleashed a rocket past helpless goalkeeper Shay Given into the back of the net, sending the United crowd into scenes of utter jubilation (BBC Sport).
United’s record goalscorer made over 500 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, bagging 253 goals and creating 146 assists overall. The forward won the Premier League title five times, the Champions League trophy, FA Cup and four League Cups during his 13-year-spell in Manchester (Transfermarkt).
Despite the fact the former England international left Old Trafford in 2017, it is clear he is still fondly remembered by a large portion of the MUFC faithful, with one fan christening him the “best United player of all time.” Another added the ace was “unstoppable.”
