According to Gianluca di Marzio, Manchester United are interested in AS Monaco’s Pietro Pellegri, via @utdreport.
Former boss Jose Mourinho initially tried to sign him two years ago, and it seems his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reignited the pursuit.
Pellegri made all the headlines during his meteoric rise to the top at Genoa and the Red Devils held talks with his representatives over a move to Old Trafford.
However, he chose to join Monaco instead for a reported fee worth £21m, which made him the second most expensive 16-year-old of all time. The wonderkid was once hailed as ‘the new Messi.’
Unfortunately, the Italian has been beset by multiple setbacks, as he has suffered from a string of injuries, and this has prevented him from becoming a regular starter at the Stade Louis II. He is currently valued at a mere £5.67m via Transfermarkt.
In comparison, Mason Greenwood has made 39 appearances for Solskjaer’s side in this season so far, scoring 14 goals and supplying one assist in total. Despite the fact most of his appearances have come as a substitute, the teenager has still managed to bag five goals in the Premier League (WhoScored).
Furthermore, whether or not Ed Woodward will be willing to splash the cash on another injury-stricken striker remains to be seen, after Radamel Falcao failed to impress at the Theatre of Dreams.
Unsurprisingly, many United fans reacted to the latest transfer update, with one supporter branding him the “most injury prone player I’ve ever seen,” and another adding “Greenwood is better.”
