Manchester United: Fans react to Red Devils plans for summer overhaul

Thomas Ward 18 April 2020, 20:50 2 minutes read

Lots of Manchester United fans have reacted to the news that the board are set to allow Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Demetri Mitchell to leave in the summer, via the Manchester Evening News.

Chief football writer Samuel Luckhurst has revealed the club are expected to release the two academy graduates before the start of next season.

Having been handed his first-team debut by former boss Louis van Gaal, Borthwick-Jackson made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, providing just 1 assist, before being shipped out on loan to Wolves, Leeds United, Scunthorpe United, Tranmere Rovers, and Oldham Athletic. His contract expires at the end of June, and although United have the option of extending his stay at Old Trafford by another year, it appears they are willing to let him go for free.

His teammate Mitchell has played just once for the senior squad, all the way back in 2017, and is also approaching the final months of his deal with the Red Devils. The 23-year-old is valued at a mere £225k and Ed Woodward is looking to cut his losses in the upcoming transfer window.

Predictably, plenty of supporters responded to the journalist’s report on Twitter, with one fan stating “our academy is overrated,” and another adding this “was long overdue.”

Take a look at the rest of the reactions down below…

I thought Borthwick-Jackson left years ago

those players are league one material

Such a shame but it’s for the best tbh. Be better for them in the long term to forge a career elsewhere. Borthwick Jackson did well when he played mainly when Van Gaal was in charge. I wish both all the best of luck

I was worried they will retire as loanees, should have been gone when LVG left.
