A number of Manchester United fans have been reacting to emerging reports that the Red Devils are preparing to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer.

United have experienced a host of defensive issues at the start of the campaign, with both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof having come under fire after the Red Devils shipped 12 goals in their opening five Premier League matches.

It is believed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prepared to activate the release clause of Upamecano, which is set at £38 million and comes into effect in 2021, per The Times. That would see his clause drop by around £7 million compared to what it had been in the summer, when he remained with Leipzig.

The 24-year-old is also attracting the attentions of the likes of Liverpool, which means that United could face heavy competition for the defender over the summer. The Red Devils are in action against Leipzig in the Champions League group stages on Wednesday night so they will get a closer look over Upamecano’s qualities.

The defender has emerged as one of the most in-demand centre-backs in Europe after his impressive form last season in Germany. The 24-year-old averaged three clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game for Leipzig last term (Sofascore).

United fans react to latest Dayot Upamecano update

Many Manchester United fans urged the Red Devils not to waste time and try and secure a move for the defender in the January window to avoid missing out on him in the summer. However, some were sceptical over their ability to attract players of his quality at the moment.

Just pay the release clause in Jan,next summer is going to be difficult

This makes so much sense tht we won’t do it. Ed will try negotiating for a lower fee.

— Pako (@PakoMabe) October 27, 2020

If we are smart we would move for him in January..just pay a little extra than the RC and he is ours. (ofc if he is willing to move in January)

— Abhishek (@Abhishek_2701) October 27, 2020

If true then we have to try reach a deal with RB by January just as Chelsea did for Pulisic.
Cause summer will obviously be too late.

Why come here when every big club will be after him? This stinks of Woodward media spin.

If he’s got a release clause like that in his contact we’re definitely not getting him next summer 😕

— Ben_UTD (@B9UTD) October 27, 2020

I expect nothing but disappointment every year we get excited but nothing happens I don’t expect anything next summer
