According to both Corriere dello Sport and Corriere del Mezzogiorno via the Daily Mail, Manchester United will have to meet Napoli’s £127m release clause if they wish to acquire defensive stalwart Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, leaving many supporters completely bewildered over the valuation.
Koulibaly, who has reportedly been targeted by United for some time as a mega defensive signing (Il Prosecco via Area Napoli), could be somewhat out of reach if the Red Devils are looking for decent market value, with the 28-year-old’s £127m valuation considered steep by many supporters. The Senegalese international is debatably one of the most sought after centre-backs in Europe, but a fee that large for someone in their late 20s could potentially require a huge leap of faith as well as deep pockets.
Compared to current United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Koulibaly doesn’t produce as much when it comes to tackles on average, with the former Crystal Palace man eclipsing him this season with 4 per game. However, you could argue that comparing Koulibaly to one of the best tacklers in the Premier League is slightly unfair, with the Senegalese still averaging more tackles (2.6) than all of the Red Devils’ current centre-backs, as per WhoScored.com.
