Manchester United are set to reward Brandon Williams with a new deal eight months after he signed a new contract, according to The Athletic.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed by Williams since he broke into the first team earlier this season.
The 19-year-old currently earns £4k-a-week but will receive a major pay rise to reflect his new status as a full-fledged professional.
Solskjaer admitted earlier this year “his hunger is a lesson for everyone who wants to be a footballer, the attitude he’s showing. It’ll be up to him, myself and the club to keep him that hungry.
“I don’t expect him to change because he’s got the heart for it.
“He’s been absolutely outstanding since he came in. Every challenge we’ve put in front of him he’s tackled head-on.”
Consequently, this latest contract news could be bad news for Luke Shaw.
Ever since he broke into the senior squad, the youngster has impressed backroom staff with his maturity on the pitch, and his rapid progress this season has caught many unawares.
Williams has made 12 appearances in the Premier League so far, scoring 1 goal, making 1.3 tackles per game and completing at least 1 clearance on average (WhoScored).
In comparison, Shaw has played 18 games in the English top flight, averaging 1.5 tackles and 2.4 clearances at the time of writing (WhoScored).
The 24-year-old’s contract is set to expire in 2023 and the club retain the option to extend the agreement by a further year.
Ed Woodward is ready to offer the academy graduate a significantly-improved deal ahead of the Premier League restart later this month.
As it stands, the teammates face a serious battle for a place in the starting lineup when football resumes. Whilst the former Southampton star is the more experienced defender, he will certainly be looking over his shoulder at Carrington training ground.
Moreover, the England international stands to lose the most from Williams’ sensational form in the future. Indeed, United’s coaches have openly admitted they admire his work ethic, which will surely send alarm bells ringing through Shaw’s ears.
It is fair to say that if the teenager can keep these performances up, he could usurp his clubmate in the years to come. They will no doubt be jostling for position in the weeks ahead.
