Manchester United: Red Devils ready for big summer clear out; good news for Solskjaer [Opinion]

Manchester United are set for a big summer clear out as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks to raise surplus cash for a squad rebuild.

The Red Devils are ready to sell six players to boost transfer funds ahead of a busy window. According to The Telegraph, Alexis Sanchez, Chris Smalling, Diogo Dalot, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard could leave if the right offers arrive.

Solskjaer has made it clear he wants to make new additions to his squad to close the gap on Premier League champions Liverpool and the afore-mentioned players could all be considered dispensable.

Man United and Chelsea appeared to be planning for a long-term rebuild before the nationwide lockdown.

While the Blues have already made the first move after signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, United are not far behind their rivals, as they have stepped up their pursuit of Jadon Sancho in recent weeks.

Solskjaer has made it clear he wants to sign a right-winger, as well as another striker and centre-back, if finances permit.

The club are not expected to beat last year’s net spend, which reportedly amounted to £75m, though they remain in the hunt for Sancho in the summer.

Getting these players off the books would be good news for the Norwegian, as they all demand high wages, in particular Sanchez, who earns £400,000-per-week with bonuses.

Recent reports suggested West Ham boss David Moyes is considering moves for Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard if the Hammers managed to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

The trio worked together during his time in charge at Old Trafford and the Red Devils duo are expected to leave in the summer. Lingard hasn’t scored in the Premier League despite being given plenty of chances by the club legend, while Jones has been limited to just two appearances in the competition so far.

In turn, Solskjaer could use the extra cash to finance moves for his top targets instead, rather than having to hold on to fringe players who are far more expensive for what they are actually worth.
