Werder Bremen are leading the race to sign Manchester United midfielder Tahith Chong on loan this summer, reports say.

Chong, 20, came off the bench as Man United beat Austrian side LASK 2-1 in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, marking his first appearance since the Premier League restart.

The academy graduate signed a new deal with the Red Devils in March which will run until 2022.

However, he has still found his chances limited under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made only three appearances in the Premier League last season.

And it is understood that Werder Bremen are interested in signing the 6-cap Netherlands U21 international on a season-long loan.

A few months after Chong extended his contract with the club, Man United are willing to let him leave temporarily.

Solskjaer is considering sending several players out on loan with the Dutchman and James Garner both at the top of the list.

A move to the Bundesliga could provide the platform he needs to take the next step forward in his career, as it has worked wonders for Solskjaer's top transfer target Jadon Sancho, who continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks.

According to The Manchester Evening News, his representatives held talks with the German club officials on Tuesday.

Bremen are reportedly in a precarious financial position and will have to heavily rely on loan signings in the summer.

The £5.67m-valued man needs to be playing games regularly and a loan spell abroad will surely benefit everyone involved. As the Dutch winger will be eager to catch the eye of United's backroom staff next season, it would certainly do him no harm at all.

In theory, he should get plenty of opportunities to test himself at the Weser Stadium, and he may return to Old Trafford armed with the experience he needs to challenge for a place in the starting lineup.
