Since the summer, United have been linked with Tottenham’s left-back Danny Rose. Some of our punters believe that the rollercoaster form of Luke Shaw has turned Jose Mourinho’s hand into potentially delving into the market for a replacement, while Ashley Young has emerged as a fine candidate for the role, which may give the United boss a bit of a headache.

Despite his outstanding performance on his return to the starting line up in United’s Champions League match against CSKA Moscow, Shaw has to prove he can remain consistent as he battles Young for the number one left back spot.

Shaw has all the attributes a regular United left-back needs and can follow in the same footsteps as Patrice Evra, Denis Irwin and company. Overlapping runs, pace, the ability to cross from deep and the fact he can defend all work in his favour.

The only thing Shaw needs to do is stay injury free and match fit and they’ll be no doubt he can fully cement his place in the team.

Alongside Shaw is the renaissance man, Ashley Young. His form this year has been outstanding and is rightly receiving many a plaudit for his efforts, with both players contracts running out in the summer, extending their Old Trafford stays is a no-brainer as it looks like they’re both bringing the best out of each other.

Save Money

By buying Rose, United will replace like for like and spend around £50m in the process. Shaw can go toe-to-toe with Rose for ability so why fork out millions for a player United already have waiting in the wings?

Instead, Mourinho could fine-tune Shaw over this season while Young is still here and take advantage of the situation.
