Former Borussia Dortmund striker Ewerthon looks poised to join Newcastle on a free transfer after his agent, Barry McIntosh, confirmed there was interest.
“I wont go into details”, said McIntosh, “but if you’re asking me would he move to Newcastle? Then yes, obviously they are a calibre of club he would very much consider playing for.”
With Carroll gone as well as Shola Ameobi and Leon Best suffering from injuries, the Magpie’s front line is looking decidedly thin on the ground. Ewerthon is a free agent after leaving Palmeiras in January and the tricky forward seems the only option given that transfers are no longer permitted.
Interest is rife in the 29 year old and McIntosh has stated that “a number of clubs like Ewerthon.” Newcastle will have to rise above the competition though the prospect of playing in the Premier League should clinch it for the Geordies. A quick, skilful footballer with a spectacular long shot, Ewerthon would be a solid addition to a severely depleted Newcastle United squad.
Ewerthon is a cultured attacker with Champions League experience and his signing would provide the Newcastle dressing room with a psychological boost as they enter the so-called “business end” of the season. If I was in Pardew’s shoes I would be doing everything in my power to make sure he is wearing black and white by the end of the Month.
Adapting to new surroundings comes naturally to the Brazilian and he proved a success in both the Spanish and German top divisions – leading Dortmund to the Bundesliga title in 2002. With only 7 caps for his country Ewerthon may see Newcastle as his last chance of gaining some additional international appearances.
