Middlesbrough: Fans hammer Tony Pulis over comments about his tenure at the club

Former Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has spoken out in defence of his time in charge of the team, pointing to the job he did under frugal financial circumstances.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the 61-year-old insisted that he performed well in his managerial tenure at the Riverside Stadium, citing his positive relationship with chairman Steve Gibson and saying that “the people who matter know the job I did“.

Teesside Live noted that Pulis had some critics during his Middlesbrough tenure and had previously spoken out against online vitriol directed at him and his players, saying: “It’s not making the world a better place, it’s making it worse.” [via Teesside Live]

Pulis told The Telegraph that 32 players had left the club during his time in charge from December 2017 to May 2019, saying that more than £50m had been recouped from the sales of Adama Traore, Ben Gibson, Patrick Bamford, Adam Forshaw and Cyrus Christie as Middlesbrough “cut their cloths accordingly” following relegation from the Premier League in 2017.
