Former Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick is set to sign his contract with Middlesbrough in the next 24 hours, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Lowdown: Carrick’s talks

BBC journalist Simon Stone recently revealed the former England international had decided against taking up the vacant manager role at Boro after holding talks with the Teesside club.

However, in a surprising U-turn in the last 48 hours, it was revealed Carrick was in ‘advanced talks’ with the Championship outfit having had a change of heart, having also been made the club’s ‘preferred candidate’.

The Latest: Carrick set to sign

After these previous reports, Downie has shared a fresh update on Carrick’s talks with Boro, revealing the former Man United assistant is indeed set to take over at The Riverside Stadium.

Taking to Twitter, the Sky Sports reporter said:

“Boro have agreed terms with Michael Carrick to take over as boss.

“The 41-year-old is set to sign his contract in next 24hrs & could be in the dugout on Saturday.”

The Verdict: Good appointment

With Middlesbrough dangerously sat 22nd in the Championship table, it is great news to hear the Teesiders are set to appoint their new manager, after a two-week vacancy ensued following Chris Wilder’s dismissal.

Having been tipped to hire Carrick by England manager Gareth Southgate, it is no surprise to see Boro chairman Steve Gibson follow the recommendation made by a club legend.

Having been praised for his ‘very good reputation’ in the game by EFL presenter David Prutton, this appears to be a strong appointment for the club, who now need to work towards getting out of the relegation zone.
