Rangers: Alex McLeish says it will be difficult to keep Nathan Patterson

Alex McLeish has said that it will now be difficult for Glasgow Rangers to keep Nathan Patterson after bids were made for him in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bids

As per The Daily Mail, Everton had bids of £5m and £8m for Patterson rejected by the Ibrox faithful.

They were going to make a third bid, but the right-back was forced to go into self-isolation, which stopped any chances of him leaving late on in the window.

The Latest: McLeish reacts to ‘amazing’ Toffees bids

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues manager now pundit McLeish has claimed that Steven Gerrard’s team will now find it difficult to keep Patterson after the Toffees made their bids:

“It will probably be frustrating for him that he’s not playing regularly.

“He is subject to this transfer fee. Everton have put in an amazing bid for a kid who’s played a couple of games for the first team.

“That’s the way in the Premier League, England and the football world. They pay for potential, as well as current form.

“Rangers, probably the alarm bells are ringing. There’s a bid for the kid, what can we do here? We can’t play the two, him and Tavernier, in the same team.

“It’s difficult to get them into the same situation. It’s just one of these conundrums that is difficult for the manager and as well as the football club itself.

“It seems if a bid was right, it would be difficult to stop him leaving.”

The Verdict: Keep for now

Even though the Gers do have James Tavernier on their books, they should be looking to keep Patterson for now, unless a huge offer was to come in for him.

At just 19 years of age, he has already shown how much potential he has by getting called up to the senior Scotland squad for Euro 2020, playing in two games in total under Steve Clarke (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, his market value will only increase the more he plays and impresses, and so if the Blues were to revisit their interest in January, RFC could be in for a potentially huge sum of money.
