The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were relieved when the final whistle was blown against Stoke City last night. The Reds struggled for some parts of the game, and in truth, though their performance justified the three points, they were slightly flattered by the scoreline.
There were a few standout players in red on the night, with Dominic Solanke and, of course, Mo Salah earning a lot of praise in the Transfer Tavern. However, there was one player that stood out for all the wrong reasons – Joel Matip. Though usually one of the more consistent hands in the Liverpool defence, Matip really struggled to deal with Stoke throughout the game, and it was his mistake that gave rise to calls for Simon Mignolet to be sent off during the clash.
As has often been the case for Liverpool this season, Klopp always has another problem to deal with in defence, and this time his problem is Matip. Dejan Lovren is far from perfect, but he didn’t make a mistake last night, and the same cannot be said for Matip.
Unsurprisingly, this has got the Liverpool fans on social media all riled up, with many taking to Twitter to reveal their frustration at Matip. With more calls for a January replacement, the defender has a lot of work to do to get the Liverpool faithful back on side.
