The Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story in the Daily Mail, that claims a number of the club’s players are on performance-related bonuses for the Champions League, starting with qualification. If Spurs miss out on the Champions League with Chelsea hot on their tails it could come at a huge financial cost for some of their players.

The Spurs fans propping our bar up have been expecting the worse. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have failed to get out of second gear in their last few games, recently losing to West Brom, drawing to Brighton and only just managing to cross the line in a poor performance against Watford. Tottenham have two games left against Newcastle and Leicester both at Wembley and if they’re to pick up six points then they’ll finish 3rd and comfortably in the Champions League.
Things aren’t as straightforward as they seem though. Since Tottenham opened up a ten-point gap on Chelsea when they beat the Blues 3-1 at Stamford Bridge they’ve stuttered in the league and the gap now sits at just two points. The club did extremely well in this season’s Champions League, topping their group and beating Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund on the way, although they fell at the hands of the experienced Juventus, losing 4-3 on aggregate after a closely fought tie.
