Newcastle United have enquired about the possibility of loaning in Cengiz Under from Italian club AS Roma in the summer transfer window, according to Inside Futbol.
As per the outlet, Roma are willing to let the Turkish international leave before the window closes, but he also has other admirers in Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City and Hertha Berlin from Germany, with the latter making an enquiry about him last week.
Despite recently bringing in a winger in Ryan Fraser on a free transfer as his deal with relegated AFC Bournemouth ran out, Steve Bruce’s team are apparently still looking to strengthen and they allegedly see Under as an attractive prospect.
However, unless Roma change their current stance, the 23-year old will not be moving to St. James’ Park in the 2020/21 term, as the Serie A side are looking to sell him on a permanent deal for €25 million, which is the equivalent of around £23 million.
Indeed, Under would be quite the coup if the Tyneside club can manage to pull off a deal. In his club career so far, the winger has scored a relatively impressive 37 goals and made a further 28 assists in 189 games in all competitions so far (via Transfermarkt).
Comparing his stats in the 2019/20 season to fellow attacking midfield players Allan Saint-Maximin, Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron in their respective domestic leagues, Under averaged the most key passes, crosses and long balls per match (per Whoscored).
Does Under start for Newcastle?
Indeed, Under would arguably be a good addition in the North East, but the Magpies may have to try and persuade Roma to loan him out rather than sell him on a permanent basis.
