Newcastle United are unlikely to make a deadline day move to sign Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan for the rest of the season, according to The Times journalist Martin Hardy.
The Magpies had been one of the clubs interested in making a late move to bring the England international in on a loan deal, with Chelsea thought to be willing for him to leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis to get some guaranteed game time after falling down the pecking order, as per Chronicle Live.
Loftus-Cheek has found himself out of Chelsea’s starting line-up so far this campaign with Frank Lampard having a host of talented options available to him in the midfield area, and so the 24-year-old, who only made seven league appearances last term (via Sofascore), needs to go and get regular football again.
Newcastle have already ruled out the prospect of making any more permanent additions and are likely to only be bringing players in on a temporary basis if indeed they are still to add to their squad on transfer deadline day.
The midfielder could have been a player who would have fitted the bill for the Magpies given he is available for loan and has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt already, but he is now expected to head somewhere other than St James’ Park.
Missing out on Loftus-Cheek should be considered a blow really for Newcastle with the 24-year-old a vert talented midfielder who would have added different qualities to their squad. He showed during a loan spell with Crystal Palace in 2017/18 that he is a very good player for a side in midtable in the Premier League, scoring two goals and making two assists in 24 appearances (via Transfermarkt), while averaging 1.1 key passes and a huge 3 dribbles per game (via Whoscored). He boasts 2 dribbles per game on average over his entire career, showing he has immense talent with the ball at his feet.
Newcastle should therefore have tried to do all they could to bring him on loan, and they could well end up regretting missing out on him if he goes onto enjoy a productive season on loan with another Premier League club.
