It’s fair to say that Leeds didn’t have the best weekend. They’ve impressed in the Championship this season, but their clash with West Brom, at times, looked like it was men against boys.
Given how well they did at the start of the season, it was a rather seismic shift from the Whites, and that is clearly a pretty big problem for Marco Bielsa.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “This year you can’t see it like two years ago with Newcastle and Brighton, or last year with Wolves”.
He continued: “Now you win one game and you can go top and if you lose one game you go third or fourth. This year until February or March a lot of teams can fight for the top of the league. It’s a big fight for us”.
Essentially, what Hernandez is discussing is with regards to consistency, or rather, the lack of it within the Championship. That is, perhaps more than anything else, the biggest cause of concern for Marco Bielsa.
It’s all well and good picking up great results, but the issue comes with the regularity of them.
They’ve picked up just two wins in their last six games, and in that time they’ve been up and down the table. Just one result has been able to cause a major swing in proceedings already this season, and that’s only growing to get stronger.
Their result against West Brom is disappointing within a vacuum, of course, but the bigger problem comes when you look back at Leeds more broadly.
They haven’t been able to nail down that consistency, and without that, there’s no chance of them being able to mount a consistent tile charge as the season goes on.
Whilst Hernandez may be defending his team, the reality is that it’s a Leeds problem, rather than a problem across the league. Sure, West Brom have been inconsistent, but league leaders Norwich City have won their last 5 league games – and they’re only getting better. Leeds, meanwhile, have won just 2 of their last 6.
If Leeds can’t get closer to that record, they’ll be facing yet more disappointment. They’re just 3 points off the top at the minute, but that means little if they lose again next week.
