Chelsea have been extremely busy in this transfer window and could still have a few tricks up their sleeve before deadline day comes around.
With their impressive haul of new recruits, the Blues will fancy themselves as competitors for the Premier League title this season. However, not all of their business has been praised.
Paul Merson has hit out at the west London club for allowing senior star Willian to leave and join capital rivals Arsenal.
Is Willian going to be missed at Chelsea?
Yes
No
“I can’t believe Chelsea let Willian go,” he told Sky Sports. “I know they’ve gone out and get special players, but there’s nothing to say they’re going to hit the ground running. In Willian, you’ve got someone there who is ready-made.”
After failing to reach an agreement regarding a new contract, the Brazilian left Chelsea as a free agent this summer. He has already impressed with his new club after Arsenal’s opening 3-0 win over Fulham saw Willian provide the assists for two of the goals.
With new signing Hakim Ziyech currently injured, Chelsea are without a recognised right-winger in their senior squad. Their match against Brighton forced them to deploy fellow newcomer Kai Havertz on the right-hand side, despite his natural position being in central attacking midfield.
“Frank Lampard has now. He hasn’t got four years. That’s management, I’m not being horrible,” Merson continued. “Even if Frank wins the league this year, it doesn’t mean he’s going to be there in four years’ time! We know that, and how it changes.”
The Blues will be hoping to scoop some silverware this season after finishing fourth in the league last term. Their victory at Brighton has put them in good stead for the rest of the campaign, but they are now preparing to face the reigning champions of England and arguably their biggest competition of the season when they welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
