Pochettino’s reluctance to spend could cause Spurs big problems

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino before the match

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has not hinted at a desire to sign new players in January, a decision which could cost the Lilywhites come the end of the season.

The North London side have arguably been the most impressive side in the Premier League this season, excluding leaders Chelsea, but the battle for a top-four spot will see two huge sides miss out.

Having slipped to third in the table this weekend, Spurs are just three points ahead of Manchester City and five ahead of Manchester United- far from a comfortable gap.

Whilst the squad has excelled this season, it says a lot that over half of their goals have been scored by star duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Outside of the two England internationals, only Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen have scored more than five goals and that suggests an injury to either of their star-man would be extremely detrimental.

Whilst that sort of tally is the same amongst their Premier League rivals, Tottenham seem more reliant on their two key-players than any other side in the top-six.

Concerns rise further with the fact that it’s both Manchester clubs currently sat outside of the top-four and the odds of both finishing in that position are extremely low.

When it comes down to it, Spurs seem to be fighting Liverpool for the final Champions League spot and whether the Lilywhites can achieve that aim is debatable.

Spurs have enjoyed a better campaign than Liverpool this season but the North London side seem to regularly endure blips at the back-end of the campaign, something they cannot afford to experience again this term.

A top-class signing in January would send a real statement of intent out to the rest of the Premier League and would show that Spurs will remain a force to be reckoned with but Pochettino’s reluctance to do that opens the door for their rivals to take advantage.
