Portsmouth are ready to make a permanent move for Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan, according to Portsmouth News.
Kenny Jackett’s side missed out on promotion from League One after their play-off semi-final heartbreak against Oxford. The tie ended 2-2 on aggregate and was decided on penalties, with loanee McGeehan missing the fateful spot kick.
The 25-year-old midfielder arrived at Pompey in January on a short-term loan deal from Championship side Barnsley and he has now been linked with a permanent move to Fratton Park.
McGeehan is said to be interested in leaving Barnsley, who sit 23rd in the Championship table, having just one year left on his contract at Oakwell.
Portsmouth News have now reported that Fratton Park officials are preparing a summer move for the £360,000-valued midfielder.
This follows recent comments made by Portsmouth winger Ryan Williams, who revealed how keen he is for McGeehan to stay at the club, saying: “He was part of a really good winning streak. Everyone wants him here – we’ll have to see what he wants and the club. For me, I want him here next year.”
Out of all the players in the Portsmouth side from the play-off against Oxford, McGeehan may feel that he has the biggest point to prove after his fateful penalty miss, so he may be tempted to return to Fratton Park and make amends for that agonising moment.
Williams’ comments suggest that he is well-liked by Pompey’s players and Jackett should consider bringing him back to the club, as he has already witnessed the midfielder’s capabilities first-hand and in detail.
