Brett Pitman gets goals. In fact, he has 38 of them in 60 starts and 27 substitute appearances for Portsmouth, as per Transfermarkt.
Therefore, it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise when he popped up with the only goal of the game as Pompey beat Crawley Town 2-0 in their opening EFL Trophy match:

It turns out that while the fans had been expecting a goal from him when he was on the pitch, what was perhaps more startling for them is that once again, the striker hadn’t been starting.
The 31-year-old had come off the bench at half time before converting Brandon Haunstrup’s cross, as per SofaScore, which actually gave him his most time on the pitch in a single game this season.
Prior to the Crawley game, Pitman had been brought on as a substitute four times, with one of those seeing him on the pitch for just one minute.
Seeing Pitman come up with a winning goal has reignited the feeling among fans that he can be the answer to get the club going up the table.
