Pompey’s sudden and harsh drop has been a big hit for the club but they still have quite an impressive list of big-money signings and departures on their books. However, given how big their record-holding signing was, it is not a big stretch to say that the player in question might remain at the top for a while longer.
Of course, you probably guessed it by now but we are indeed talking about Peter Crouch and his move from Liverpool in 2008/09 for an incredible fee of £12.3m. Crouch’s arrival surpassed the previous record that was set in 2007/08 by Sulley Muntari for his £9.4m transfer from Udinese.
But what’s probably the most intriguing thing about their top transfers deals is that five out of the top six and seven out of the top ten were conducted in the same season – the 2007/08 campaign. Apart from Muntari, Portsmouth also purchased John Utaka (3rd), Jermain Defoe (4th), David Nugent (5th), Lassana Diarra (6th), Glen Johnson (9th) and Papa Bouba Diop (10th). We don’t even have to say that it was quite a successful season in the market for the club that year.
But the years after that, 2008 and 2009 specifically, were big for sales. In 2009/10, they sold Glen Johnson to Liverpool for a club-record fee of £18.4, surpassing the previous record-holder, Diarra, who was sold to Real Madrid a year before that for £18m.
Other than Diarra, they also moved on Defoe (3rd) and Muntari (4th) during that same season. Probably the most important thing, however, is that they made quite a bit of profit on most of their sales, suggesting there’s a good transfer policy at the club as a whole.
It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Crouch among Portsmouth’s most famous transfers ever. Interestingly, the slender giant has had two stints at the club, and intriguingly, both were quite short, but he still managed to command quite a big fee both with his arrival and then the eventual departure too.
The players such as Muntari, Diarra and Johnson also deserve to be given a shout as well since all of them turned more than just some heads with their transfers.
Niko Kranjcar is surely someone many Portsmouth fans still remember fondly as the Croat has had a fruitful spell with Pompey back in the day. And then there are the likes of Kevin Prince Boateng for his short and yet memorable gig with the club, Arjan de Zeeuw or Billy Gilbert, all of whom deserve to be mentioned here as well.
