Portsmouth are showing increased interest in Bristol City striker Matty Taylor, according to an exclusive from Hampshire Live.
Kenny Jackett’s side will approach the League One play-offs with optimism of joining both Coventry City and Rotherham in gaining promotion to the Championship.
Due to face Oxford United in the semi-final stage of the play-off, Pompey will come up against transfer target Taylor, who has been plying his trade with the U’s of late. The 30-year-old joined Oxford on loan from Bristol City last summer and he has provided them with an impressive 13 goals and two assists during his 26 appearances in League One.
The 30-year-old will see his current contract with Bristol City expire at the end of this month, making him available on a free transfer.
Pompey boss Jackett will undoubtedly have eyes on the striker when the two clubs meet in the play-offs but he has silenced speculation recently, telling Hampshire Live: “We’ve approached nobody for next year, nobody at all. There will be massive financial losses next season for every club and adding players right now isn’t something we can do.
“We just can’t at the moment. Until we get a start date, a set of fixtures, how many games, and most importantly what’s the situation with the crowd there’s not going to be any development in terms of signings.”
During his time at Bristol City, Taylor scored just eight goals in 75 games, whilst also gaining 13 assists in the process.
Jackett will have the benefit of seeing first-hand what Taylor can do when the striker goes up against Portsmouth in the play-offs in a couple of weeks’ time.
While the manager may be coy on transfer targets right now, expect him to be keen on bringing the 30-year-old to Fratton Park if he impressed against Pompey in their upcoming clash.
