Liverpool could do with more depth up top as they look to strengthen their challenge for the Premier League title.
Jurgen Klopp’s starting front three are about as good as they get. The German boss could not ask much more from a frontline that have contributed to 47 goals between them so far this campaign.
However, to keep up their four-point lead on Manchester City at the top of the table, Klopp could look to add further quality to the options he has at his disposal.
Reports from De Telegraaf via Sport Witness say that Liverpool are keen on Steven Bergwijn having sent club officials to watch him on multiple occasions and further reports from the Liverpool Echo suggest the club is watching Bergwijn, citing De Telegraaf as the original source on the matter.
Given that the 21-year-old has 10 goals and nine assists in 25 games for PSV Eindhoven this season, let’s take a look at the potential consequences of the move…
Title bid strengthened
Liverpool’s best football this season has been played in a 4-2-3-1 system with an interchanging attacking quartet of Xherdan Shaqiri, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane as displayed in the 5-1 win against Arsenal, the 4-0 win against Newcastle, the 3-1 win against Manchester United and more.
If one of them was to get injured, it could harm the fluidity of that front four as Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi are not as well-equipped as the other options, so Klopp may have to revert back to the 4-3-3 system.
Whereas if Bergwijn was to be brought in, he could be used on either wing to lessen the burden on the current front four, keeping them all fresh for the title run in and giving defenders another tough opponent to think about in the process.
Harry Wilson’s pathway blocked
Wilson has been in good form for Derby this season, possibly not as remarkable as his goalscoring record would suggest, but even still to score 10 goals and help with two assists in 22 games of the second tier of English football is still is impressive.
It would be fair to expect Wilson to return to Liverpool at the end of the season and to warrant chances next season as a result of his performances this campaign, however, if Bergwijn is to arrive, Wilson will really struggle to get a regular place in the Reds’ starting side.
