The international break has given fans and the club the opportunity to take a look at what kind of players to target in the summer transfer window. One area that may need strengthening is at the heart of the defence with Dejan Lovren’s future currently in doubt.
The Reds have relied heavily on the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip in the current campaign, but they could soon have Joe Gomez back in their ranks which would come as a huge boost.
However, it appears as if the Merseyside club are eyeing another central defender, as according to TEAMtalk, Liverpool were set to scout Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar in yesterday’s game between Slovakia and Wales.
Skriniar has established himself as one of the best central defenders in Europe over the past season or so, so here are the potential consequences of the Inter Milan man joining…
FSG LAND LOVREN REPLACEMENT

Of course, when signing any big player it’s obvious that FSG will come into it somewhere. It’s believed (as per TEAMtalk) that Inter Milan are ready to cash in on the Slovakia international at around £30 million.
Indeed, paying £30 million for one of Europe’s best defenders seems like a no-brainer, so FSG should get straight onto that and may not have any trouble in stumping up the cash after splashing out on Van Dijk.
The Inter Milan man could even replace Dejan Lovren who has struggled through injury and has only managed to make the substitutes’ bench in the Reds’ last two games. With Gomez returning to the fold at some point this season and Joel Matip establishing himself alongside Van Dijk, it would be almost impossible for Lovren to find a way in.
VAN DIJK PARTNER

Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip have built an impressive partnership at the heart of the defence for the Reds in the current campaign, but the Dutchman has had to take the reigns at times.
There’s no denying that Matip is enjoying arguably his best season in the red shirt but he isn’t the world-class central defender that can take Liverpool places in seasons to come.
Therefore, Liverpool can finally bag themselves a fitting partner for Virgil Van Dijk in the form of Skriniar, as he’s strong, quick and impossible to get past, as well as having all the ingredients to become one of the world’s best.
