Victor Orta is now a month into his second campaign as Leeds United’s director of football and it seems like finally, he is getting the recognition he deserves.
Orta has undertaken various roles in his journey to Yorkshire and the Humber. Orta was originally a journalist for renown Spanish publication Marca as well as working as a football agent. Behind the scenes in football, at first, it was centred around his homeland as he was part of the Rayo Valladolid coaching staff, then to Sevilla joining as part of the technical and recruitment staff where he was promoted to technical director. Orta shone in his role at Sevilla and attracted interest from Europe’s elite, including the likes of Juventus.
The Spaniard decided on Zenit St. Petersburg whereby with such gargantuan finances at his disposal, Orta was able to lure Hulk and Axel Witsel to join the Zenit uprising. He had a stint at Elche before joining up with fellow countryman Aitor Karanka at Middlesbrough in which they won promotion in Orta’s first season at the Riverside Stadium.
Orta was then responsible for recruiting competently enough for Boro to stay in the Premier League at the first time of asking. Orta used his Spanish contacts to bring in the likes of Victor Valdes, Antonio Barragan, Bernardo Espinosa and Alvaro Negredo amongst other names from Premier League sides. It wasn’t to be as Boro went straight back to the Championship, Orta stayed for one more season, but like Karanka, eventually moved on.
Swapping Teeside for West Yorkshire, Orta moved to Leeds and in his opening summer transfer window, he helped sign 14 first-team names including Adam Forshaw, Pontus Jansson, Samu Saiz, Tyler Roberts, Ezgjan Alioski and Mateusz Klich to name a few. Orta came under fire from Leeds supporters at the back end of last season when results weren’t going their way, but they can have no complaints now.
Even signings made prior to the 2017/18 season have come to fruition under ‘El Loco’ Marcelo Biesla. Jansson, Klich and Saiz have been instrumental in Leeds’ early-season performances and have made Biesla’s transitioning of his philosophy all too easy when players as such can apply it so effortlessly.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Leeds plan to alter their recruitment strategy to more domestic signings and Orta hasn’t disappointed through the permanent signings of Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford as well as the loan deals to bring Jack Harrison, Lewis Baker and Izzy Brown to Elland Road. Douglas was slipped straight in at left-back and Bamford has shown his talent from the bench but will have to wait his turn for a look-in as Kemar Roofe continues his impeccable form. Leeds fans can be sure to say they have been proved wrong by Orta whose signings enlisted have assisted the Whites to the top of the Championship.
