Many Crystal Palace fans have responded to the news that Gary Cahill has been named as the September Player of the Month.
Will this be Wilfried Zaha's final season at Crystal Palace?
According to the club website, the former England vice-captain managed to soak up 51% of the votes for the award.
In the three matches played in September, Palace were able to earn four points. It started woefully with a 4-0 loss against Tottenham; the Eagles then threw away a 1-0 lead against Wolves in the dying moments at home, sharing the points in a 1-1 draw; and it finished on a better note, with Palace learning from their mistakes and holding out for a 2-0 win over Norwich City.
So far, the former Chelsea man has played six times for the club, and that included playing every minute of the September fixtures.
According to WhoScored, Cahill has made a decent start, too. With an average rating of 6.77, the 33-year-old tops the charts for defenders both with blocks (1.2 per match) and clearances (5.4 per match).
Upon receiving the Player of the Month trophy, Cahill said: “Thank you! I’ve just come to the club so I’m delighted to have got this.
“I want to thank the fans and also I want to thank my teammates and the staff around the training ground that have helped me settle in so fast. I appreciate that, I’ve enjoyed it and there’s plenty more hard work to come.
“The Spurs game was a bit of a slap across our face I think. We were knocked off in that game and it’s unlike us from what I’ve seen from when I first came.
“We quickly rectified that and got back to the kind of performances that we expect. This month has been okay for us and we’ve put ourselves in a position at the start of this season and, like I said, there’s plenty more to come with a tough month next month.”
There’s no doubt Cahill is turning out to be a great bit of business by the Eagles.
