According to a recent report from The Independent, Cedric Soares could be set for a move away in the January transfer window. The 27-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Southampton and has done so since leaving Sporting Lisbon in the summer window of 2015, although a lack of regular game time under new Saints chief Ralph Hasenhuttl has plunged his future at St Mary’s into doubt.

And reports suggest that the ex-Red Bull Leipzig manager could seek to offload the Portugal international this month in a bid to cut the numbers in his squad, which should be of keen interest to Leicester City manager Claude Puel as his side seek to push for European football this season.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Foxes currently find themselves in seventh place in the Premier League table having won nine of their opening 21 matches of the season, with the Foxes very much the best of the rest so far this term.

But with seventh place yielding Europa League qualification spots for the likes of Burnley and Everton in recent seasons, there could be an opportunity for the Midlands outfit to return to European competition next term, having tasted Champions League football in the 2016/17 campaign following their incredible Premier League title success.

But they are sure to come under threat from several other sides for seventh place this term which is why signings this month are paramount, with a right back perhaps a priority addition for Leicester boss Puel in a bid to allow Ricardo Pereira to play further forward.

The ex-Porto star made the move to the King Power Stadium during the summer and has proven to be an absolute revelation for the Foxes, not least in going forward in netting twice and laying on three assists in 18 Premier League games for Puel’s side.

And with some of his best performances coming when playing slightly further forward, Puel would be wise to seek an upgrade on Danny Simpson this month in a bid to let Pereira enjoy the freedom of a more advanced role - Cedric’s arrival would do just that.

The Portugal international, who helped his country win the European Championships back in 2016, may not have enjoyed his best spell at Southampton in the last 12 months or so, but he has on the whole been a consistently solid performer for the Saints with 116 appearances for the club, 102 of which have come in the Premier League.

And in playing regularly under Puel during his time in charge on the South Coast, the Frenchman clearly rates Cedric highly to produce the goods down the right-hand-side - regular football in a team that, up until last season, were comfortably in the Premier League’s top ten says a lot about the 27-year-old’s ability.

As such, with Pereira very much producing the goods slightly further forward in Puel’s team, the Leicester boss should be looking at a more solid and defensive-minded right back in a bid to unleash the Portuguese ace in a more advanced role - and 27-year-old Cedric appears to be the ideal man for the job, in a move which would certainly aid in Leicester’s European push.
