Wolves: Tony Cascarino raves about Adama Traore’s performance against Southampton

Former footballer Tony Cascarino has heaped praise on Wolves’ Adama Traore after his performance at the weekend helped them record a remarkable comeback against Southampton.

Traore assisted twice in a second-half comeback which saw Wolves turn a 2-0 deficit into three points on Saturday afternoon, and Cascarino struggled to contain his delight over the Spaniard’s performance.

Speaking on TalkSPORT over the weekend, Cascarino highlighted the winger’s vast improvement from his days at Aston Villa, before paying tribute to the 23-year-old’s lightning pace.

He said: “Watching the game [on Saturday], Adama Traore – oh, wow. He’s destroying teams. He is running at defenders, he’s breaking free, he’s causing havoc. He’s improved a hell of a lot. When I first saw him at Villa, I remember thinking, ‘I don’t think he knows what he’s really doing, he’s a winger that’s really quick but he doesn’t really know when to run.’

“That pace just scares the life out of defenders. He could give you two or three yards and go past you comfortably.”

Has Adama Traore been Wolves' best player this season?

No

Traore certainly put in a shift against the Saints – with his input earning him the accolade of Man of the Match from WhoScored and BBC Sport. He also completed nine successful dribbles throughout the game, which was as many as the entire Saints team recorded, while his remaining Wolves colleagues also made that total between them.

So it seems clear that he stood out on Saturday – not least to Cascarino – though his dribbling qualities may be no surprise, with Traore recording more dribbles per game (5.7) than any other player in the Premier League; only Wilfried Zaha makes as many as five.

The stats suggest that Traore is making the most out of his strengths and after seeing them come to the fore against Southampton, perhaps the recognition he has received from Cascarino is somewhat overdue.

Having entered a league of his own as far as dribbling is concerned amongst his Premier League peers, perhaps Wolves possess a threat unlike any other in the division now Traore appears to have perfected the art.
