One man whose name hasn’t been heard in the Football Transfer Tavern since the closure of the January transfer window is that of Celtic striker Gary Hooper. But discussion about his future has returned today after Mirror Football linked him with a surprise £6 million move to Queens Park Rangers this summer.
Hooper was the subject of widespread transfer speculation during January with Norwich City making several failed bids for his services while it was also understood that Tottenham Hotspur demonstrated some interest.
The former Scunthorpe United man has hit a very impressive 29 goals in his 49 appearances for the Bhoys this term and in his 94 matches for the Scottish club he has scored 63 times, a record to match any top striker.
The English-born forward, of course, has previous experience of playing in the Championship when he netted 20 times for the Iron as they managed to stay up against the odds during the 2009/10 season before he joined Celtic in a bargain £2.4 million move.
QPR boss Harry Redknapp is now willing to use the extra funds generated by any possible sale of Loic Remy to land the 25-year-old.
However one punter in the bar suggests that Redknapp may face competition from fellow Premier League relegation outfit Reading and Hooper’s former boss at Glanford Park Nigel Adkins who is known to be a key admirer of his talents.
