Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton was left in awe of Ryan Jack, that is following his latest impressive performance.
The 27-year-old played a starring role in the Gers’ 4-0 win against St Johnstone at the weekend, holding things together in his holding midfield position as well as also managing to rack up two assists.
Whilst the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe often grab the headlines, Jack’s outstanding performances are not lost on Hutton who has highlighted him as a key player for the Ibrox club and believes that he is showing vast improvements from last season.
Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Scotland international said: “He was a consistent player last season, went about his business well and did all he could, but this year I think he has come into his own a little bit and he is fast becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for Gerrard.
“He was outstanding the other night in that defensive midfield role in Europe [against Feyenoord] and I think that’s his best position and where Gerrard wants to use him.
“Today [against St Johnstone] obviously watching the game, he had a brilliant game and got two assists so I think actually he has grown into the role that he was brought to the club to do.”
Since he first joined Rangers from Aberdeen in 2017, Jack has been used both in central midfield and in the holding role. But is seems like he is much more comfortable playing deeper, having featured there more often, and the arrival of the naturally more attacking Joe Aribo from Charlton Athletic is allowing him to occupy that position on a more regular basis.
If he can continue performing to the levels he has been so far this season, it will surely not be too long before he adds to his two Scotland caps. It could also help Rangers close the gap on Celtic as they bid for a first Scottish Premiership title since 2011.
