Rangers: Andy Firth’s contract extension draws mixed reaction from these fans

Rangers confirmed on Monday that goalkeeper Andy Firth has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Ibrox until 2021, with the news confirmed on their official website rangers.co.uk and shared on Twitter via @RangersFC.

The 23-year-old came to the club from Barrow this time last year but has had virtually no chance to prove his worth at Ibrox – his only competitive appearance for the Light Blues saw him come on as a substitute for the concluding seven minutes against Kilmarnock on the final Premiership matchday last season, in which time he was beaten by an Eamonn Brophy penalty.

Firth has been included in matchday squads by Steven Gerrard on five occasions this season, most recently making the bench for last Friday’s Scottish Cup tie against Stranraer (as per TransferMarkt), but he has had to be quite patient in waiting for another first team opportunity following the solitary appearance he got eight months ago. As noted by the Daily Record, he was reprimanded by a Celtic steward for straying into the Hoops’ end to pass on a message to Allan McGregor in last month’s derby at Parkhead.

Rangers’ decision to extend the goalkeeper’s contract elicited a mixed reaction from these fans on Twitter, with some appreciating his commitment to the club and others rather less impressed by the show of faith in a player who has barely featured for the first team:
