Chris Sutton believes Rangers need to improve their mindset heading into the upcoming season if they are to have any chance of lifting silverware.
The former Celtic player, who is known to like taunting the blue part of Glasgow with jibes and mocking remarks on Twitter, suggested the Light Blues do not know how to win games when it is most important and that they need to focus on other clubs than just their Old Firm rivals.
He stated that he felt Steven Gerrard’s Rangers ‘blew a magnificent chance’ last season because they could not beat the teams that they should have been.
“You have to say they (Rangers) blew a magnificent chance last term. It wasn’t the Celtic games, it was a failure to deal with the rest of the league that cost them. They didn’t have the week-in, week-out winning mentality,” Sutton wrote in the Daily Record.
“Celtic were in turmoil and they still couldn’t take advantage. That was a huge miss and Gerrard cannot afford a repeat.
“Gerrard has brought in 24 players over the past 13 months since he’s been in charge. That’s some haul. He’s been backed to the hilt and now it is payback time. This isn’t a championship race which can be just tossed away.”
Rangers finished the Scottish Premiership campaign nine points behind their rivals last season as they continued to put in some inconsistent performances, perhaps backing up Sutton’s point.
As noted by Balls.ie, Gerrard was highly critical of his side at times throughout his first campaign in charge of the Ibrox outfit and even stated in February for the club to ‘forget titles, forget closing gaps’.
It was not just inconsistent performances that cost them last season though, as Vital Rangers revealed ill-discipline cost them points as well.
According to their article, Alfredo Morelos cost the Light Blues 12 points when he was either sent off or subsequently missing the match because of suspension.
With all the additions they have made this summer, and if they are to improve on last season’s issues, Gerrard’s side should be in a great position to challenge Celtic for that elusive Scottish Premiership title.
