Rangers fans on Twitter were left bewildered as Gerrard went with unusual formation last night

As you’ll probably know, Steven Gerrard’s first European adventure in management came to an end last night. The Gers bowed out of the Europa League after a 1-0 loss away to Rapid Vienna and the fans were gutted, although some of them saw it coming when they found themselves looking at their starting eleven from all angles after Gerrard named a strange lineup.

Stevie G moved away from the way he usually set his side up to go with a 4-5-1 type system. His two wide options were Glenn Middleton and Scott Arfield as he opted to leave out the in-form Eros Grezda, which seemed a strange decision seeing as another wing option, Daniel Candeias was unavailable for the clash as he serves a European suspension. So all in all, there were some very confused Gers out there.

Gerrard has made rotating players absolutely key to his success at the cub but a lot of the fans would have avoided making many changes to the side yesterday as they went into the must-win away game. The next chance that the club will have to bounce back from the painful defeat will be on Sunday when they travel back to Vienna and to the more familiar Ibrox when they host Hamilton in Scottish Premier League action.

The fans were all a bit shocked to see Gerrard’s team and will hope that he doesn’t get it wrong like he did last night anytime soon.
