Rangers: Fans plead for striker to be signed after Jermain Defoe’s injury against Ross County

A number of Rangers fans are begging for the club to sign a striker before the end of the January transfer window on Friday after two of their centre-forwards endured injury concerns this week.

Top scorer Alfredo Morelos had a calf problem which prevented him from starting in Wednesday’s win over Ross County, although he did appear as a substitute in the 2-0 win. However, that result was overshadowed by the injury-enforced withdrawal of Jermain Defoe, who pulled up after chasing a through ball on the hour mark.

The latter bagged his 17th goal of the season in the win at Ibrox and has now scored in three of his last four matches, while Morelos has found the net 28 times for the ‘Gers this term. The pair have scored more goals between them than Rangers’ next 11 highest scorers combined, with Greg Stewart the only other senior centre-forward at the club – he has just three goals to his name in 2019/20 and has also been struggling with injury.

Steven Gerrard said after the Ross County game that he doesn’t know how long Defoe’s injury absence will be and added that he is “confident” about reinforcing his squad before Friday’s transfer deadline (as per Daily Record). These Rangers fans on Twitter certainly wish to see Gerrard going into the market for another forward after Wednesday night’s developments:

How badly do Rangers need another striker given the sparsity of options in that position? Should they have addressed the role much earlier in the transfer window? Comment below with your views!
