PA Sport reporter Andy Newport tweeted on Tuesday (via @AndyNewportPA) that Rangers defender Matt Polster is set to remain at the club for the rest of the season, having initially been expected to go out on loan during the January transfer window.

The Daily Record claimed in late December that the 26-year-old was among five players that Steven Gerrard was planning to offload this month but now, as reported by PA Sport [via Evening Express], the ‘Gers boss wants to keep the American at Ibrox for another few months.
Prior to Wednesday’s game against Ross County, Polster has made just two starts all season, both in the first few weeks of the campaign, and has featured in just three league games (as per TransferMarkt). However, he came on as a half-time substitute in Sunday’s defeat at Hearts and, as claimed by Newport, did enough at Tynecastle to convince Gerrard to keep him at the club.
Jon Flanagan, the right-back who was replaced by Polster at the weekend, has come under fire from some ‘Gers fans over his recent performances against St Mirren and Hearts. By contrast, these Rangers supporters on Twitter gave their backing to the American, with one pondering whether Flanagan could instead be shown the door ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline:

Not surprised at this, with Tav out and Flanagan being as bad as he was, Polster showing up well as he did on Sunday will rightly elevate him up the pecking order. Hope he takes his chance tomorrow.
