Rangers: Fans want to see George Edmundson start in cup tie against Stranraer

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard seemed to drop a very strong selection hint in Thursday’s press briefing ahead of the Scottish Cup tie against Stranraer on Friday night.

In a clip posted by the club’s official Twitter channel @RangersFC, Gerrard appeared alongside George Edmundson and interjected during a question that was put to the defender about him possibly featuring. The manager quipped: “He’s starting against Stranraer”, a response that drew a laugh from the 22-year-old and some of the assembled media.

Edmundson has been limited to seven first-team appearances so far this season, with three of those coming as a substitute, and has started just one league game in 2019/20. His brief substitute appearance towards the end of the derby win over Celtic in December was his first at senior level since early October. [via TransferMarkt]

However, injury to Filip Helander means that Gerrard is down to three senior centre-backs for the cup clash and the manager has sung the praises of Edmundson already this season, describing his performance in the 5-0 home win over Hamilton as “faultless” and “outstanding” (as per Evening Times).

Following the defender’s appearance at the pre-Stranraer press briefing, these Rangers fans on Twitter want to see the man affectionately called “the fridge” by one supporter being included in the starting line-up at Ibrox on Friday:
