Rangers: Connor Goldson backed to leave in January

Rangers: Connor Goldson backed to leave in January -Rangers News

Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson looks likely to leave the club in the January transfer window, according to BBC Radio pundit Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Goldson out of contract

The 29-year-old has made 19 starts in the Premiership this season, but despite being a regular in the team, an exit from Glasgow could well be on the cards.

Goldson’s current Rangers deal expires at the end of this season and it doesn’t appear as though a new contract will be agreed between now and the summer, with the Englishman rejecting the offer of an extension last month.

That means the defender could leave Ibrox this month in order to receive a fee for his services, rather than heading out the door on a free transfer in the off-season, although there have been reports that the Gers are reluctant to let him leave in January.

The Latest: Whelan talks up possible Goldson exit

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan nonetheless claimed that Goldson could easily move to a new club this month, with that scenario benefiting all parties. He outlined:

“If something comes in where they can get a bit of money for him in January, then they’ll take it. Absolutely no doubt about it, it’s a no brainer.

“If they do lose him, they lose him. At the minute, he seems pretty set on leaving.  If they can grab any kind of money for him in January, it would be better than nothing.

“Could they entice him to stay with another contract? Maybe from that money that Patterson’s sale has just left.

“Maybe it was a bigger contract that he wanted, more wages. This could free up that cash to actually try and tempt Connor Goldson to stay.”

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

Goldson has been an impressive servant for the Gers, making 193 appearances in total and getting his hands on the Premiership trophy at Ibrox last season, along with being hailed as ‘outstanding’ by his former manager Steven Gerrard.

However, if selling him now generates more funds for future signings, it makes complete sense to move the centre-back on to pastures new in the coming weeks.

At 29, he is still in and around his peak years, so it is easy to envisage another club showing an interest in January, allowing a transfer to go through. Indeed, there have been reports of a possible reunion with Gerrard at Aston Villa.

On the other hands, there is an argument to say that selling a stalwart such as Goldson weakens the Gers’ chance of defending their league title, so it is a case of weighing up the positives and the negatives of doing a deal this month.

In other news, interest has reportedly been shown in one Rangers player. Find out who it is here.
