Calvin Bassey may not have been expecting to play a significant role for Glasgow Rangers against Standard Liege last night, but he did just that.
Steven Gerrard’s side kicked off their Europa League campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 win in terrible conditions in Belgium. James Tavernier opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first-half whilst Kemar Roofe netted a stunning strike in injury time after the break.
The departure of Borna Barisic to injury was no doubt a blow to the Ibrox outfit, but Bassey did fantastically when he was introduced. The 20-year-old was a strong and calming presence on the left side of the back four, winning five of his seven duels and completing two tackles.
Are you happy with the signing of Bassey?
All in all, he helped his side get the group stage off to the perfect start, and many ‘Gers supporters were delighted with his display. They took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on a player hailed by one fan as an “absolute monster”.
Let’s see what they had to say about Bassey below

Proper athlete as well Ninj. Seemingly has really bought into the club and ‘gets’ the whole deal.
