This is exactly the start that the centre-back would have wanted, and former ‘Gers full-back Alan Hutton has been discussing Balogun following his performance at Pittodrie.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said: “I thought he was excellent. To come in after just signing, probably not knowing his teammates that well and put in a performance like that was outstanding.
“He came out with the ball and looked comfortable, every time he was asked to defend he did and I think Stevie Gerrard will be over the moon with his performance.
“It’s difficult to come into a team, especially a Rangers team with high pressure and put in a performance like that is really good.
“It looks like him and Connor Goldson have got a good partnership already and they’ve only played one game.”
It’s hard to disagree with Hutton here – Balogun put in a great performance in the win at Abderdeen and picked up a 7.6 rating, per SofaScore. The Nigerian international managed to make three clearances, blocked one shot and made one tackle. His dominance showed as he won all three of his ground duels and all six of his aerial duels whilst completing three of his five long balls.
These statistics from the game suggest that the 32-year-old was dominant at the back and supporters should be excited to see him in action throughout the season.
The praise from Hutton is justified and Gerrard should be happy that the pairing of Connor Goldson and Balogun could be very strong at the back for the ‘Gers this season, assuming he goes with that duo as his first-choice centre-back partnership.
