Steven Gerrard has fired a hint towards the Glasgow Rangers board to consider new contracts for 12 of the club’s players.
Gerrard wants plethora of new deals
The season has started fantastically for the Ibrox outfit so far. They are top of the Premiership, and are unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions.
As such, Gerrard is looking to tie down a number of first-team players who have contributed to this early-season success. He said prior to the 54-time Scottish champions’ clash against Standard Liege in the Europa League:
“I can name probably a dozen players that, in the back of my mind, I am certainly thinking about in terms of extensions and different contracts.”
Important for the Gers’ future
Whilst success this season is at the forefront of everyone’s mind this term, the Glasgow-based outfit must think about the future as well. Gers players are always going to be in demand from richer clubs – Ryan Kent, for example, was the subject of a £10m bid from Leeds over the summer, whilst the likes of Lille, Marseille and AC Milan were all linked with Colombia international Alfredo Morelos throughout the transfer window.
Will Rangers win the league this season?
Contracts don’t really tend to stop a player leaving the club, but it does at least put the Gers in a strong position when other sides do come calling. Their ability to rebuild is based on having the sufficient funds to replace the stars that will eventually depart. Longer and better contracts allow them to command the fees that will help them to do just that.
In other news, Gers fans are perplexed by this 24-year-old’s Team of the Week snub. Let us know what you think in the comments!
