Alan Hutton has suggested that Glasgow Rangers may cash in on Josh McPake, with QPR and Bristol City reportedly interested in his services.
Hutton believes McPake could leave
McPake is currently on loan at Harrogate Town in League Two and has made 14 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit in the league this term (Transfermarkt).
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has suggested that the 19-year-old may depart Ibrox on a permanent basis. He said:
“If you’re talking about the clubs that you’ve just mentioned, then they’ll want to buy him. It’s as simple as that. These sort of clubs won’t be looking to loan, in my opinion.
“This is the thing. When you allow your young players to go out on loan down south or wherever it might be and they’re impressing, they’re still so young, other teams are going to look at them.
“It’s just normal, and they’re a big draw. Obviously, English clubs take talent from Scotland and it’s a big draw for them.
“I think it will come down to where Rangers see him next season. Do they see him part of their plans, within their squad?
“If they don’t, they’ll try and make money out of their young talent coming through.”
Jury still out
In those 14 matches in the English fourth tier, McPake has two goals to his name. Since joining in January, he has played in all but one match, which shows he is valued by manager Simon Weaver, and there is every chance he could continue to shine between now and the end of the season.
Will Josh McPake make it at Ibrox?
However, this has been a fantastic campaign for Rangers, and the standards required by Steven Gerrard and co have been raised by their Premiership title triumph. Whether McPake is ready for that pressure yet is up for debate – after all, he has just 32 professional appearances to his name. It remains to be seen whether Gerrard is eager to keep him at the club.
In other news, Rangers are interested in this 18-goal striker.
