Glasgow Rangers may yet be able to hold on to Alfredo Morelos for the 2020/21 season, with reports claiming that Lille have two other strikers lined up as transfer targets.
Football Insider reported this week that the ‘Gers were on the brink of agreeing a £17m deal to sell the striker to the Ligue 1 outfit.
However, as per Daily Record, the French club are close to agreeing the signing of Burak Yilmaz after he left Besiktas, while reports in France claimed that Lille will launch a fresh €30m (£27m) for Gent’s Jonathan David.
Yilmaz is reportedly heading for Lille after an impressive season with Besiktas, for whom he netted 14 times in 26 games in all competitions (0.54 goals per game).
Meanwhile, David hit 23 goals in 40 appearances (0.58 per game) for Gent in 2019/20, including five goals in their Europa League campaign, and the 20-year-old has a remarkable goal return of 11 in 12 caps for Canada.
Morelos plundered 29 goals for the ‘Gers last season in 46 matches, a return of 0.63 goals per game. He had been on course for an even higher figure going into the winter break, with 28 strikes in 35 games, an average of 0.8 per game. Just under half of his goal tally came in the Light Blues’ run to the Europa League last of 16.
Lille’s bank balance is set to be topped up to the tune of £45m after confirmation of Victor Osimhen’s move to Napoli, which leaves the Ligue 1 side with plenty of money to spend and a need to replace the Nigerian, who struck 18 goals in 38 appearances last term.
The possibility of Morelos moving to Lille is still a firm one, with the striker reportedly keen on making the move, while the Ligue 1 side can certainly afford to sign him after selling Osimhen.
Do you think Rangers could yet keep Morelos at Ibrox this season?
However, with Yilmaz reportedly close to signing and David still a possibility, their interest in the Colombian may diminish, so there could be hope yet for the ‘Gers that they will keep the 24-year-old for another few months at least.
