The Sunday Mail chief football writer has revealed on Twitter the winger is close to joining Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs on a loan deal in a strange turn of events.
Steven Gerrard had revealed prior to their match with Kilmarnock this weekend that Middleton had been set to head out to Holland on a temporary deal, however it seems he will be playing his football a little closer to home instead.
It is a rather strange turn of events considering Gerrard’s public confirmation about a switch to Holland, however a move to Hibernian may actually be better for everyone involved.
The 19-year-old is believed to be highly-rated by the coaching staff at Rangers, so the potential of playing regular first-team football for the Scottish Premiership outfit could benefit the teenager’s development a lot better than the alleged move to the Eredivisie with NAC Breda.
The Light Blues would be able to keep a close eye on how things turn out for the winger and how well he continues to progress with his game as it should give them a clearer picture in their minds about whether he has what it takes to become an integral member of the senior side at Ibrox moving forward.
Middleton, who is also a Scotland Under-19 international, had a really productive season in the team last year as he managed to net himself five goals and provide a further five assists in his 29 appearances for Rangers, which included featuring in the Europa League (Transfermarkt).
However, with the arrivals of Greg Stewart, Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, as well as the return of Jamie Murphy, it would have always been a huge challenge for him to rack up that many appearances once again this time around.
Joining Hibernian could be somewhat a masterstroke of a deal for Rangers, Gerrard and Middleton moving forward as it has the potential to benefit the Light Blues in the long run.
Although clubs are hardly going to want to see one of their players perform well for a divisional rival and should the 19-year-old be able to put in some stellar performances for the Easter Road outfit, then it could provide the Bears with a positive indication about whether he can make it at the top level of Scottish football moving forward whilst getting some all-important regular exposure.
