Richard Gough has revealed he hopes Steven Gerrard will be at Rangers for at least a few more years, although he has admitted it would be hard for the manager to turn down the Liverpool job should the opportunity present itself.
The former Gers captain was full of praise for the current Ibrox chief and believes he has brought back the spotlight to the club after a number of years being in the dark, whilst he also stated that he hopes Gerrard gives himself enough time to complete the job he has set out to do in Glasgow.
“He’s brought something to the club which we never had, or certainly had been lacking in the last few years. And that was a profile. We’re now back on Sky Sports news and we’re back in the spotlight,” Gough told The National.
“No one is bigger than the club, but Steven is the face of it and it has given Rangers a lot of positives. Everyone down in England follows his progress. I think most expect him to return to Liverpool one day and he probably will.
“But I certainly hope he’s here for another three or four years. I am always delighted when I see Liverpool winning because I know they’ll be happy with their manager and that means we can keep hold of Steven. As soon as Liverpool start to lose I think Mr King will be getting a knock on the door. Steven won’t be able to refuse that and I understand that.
“But hopefully he can get us back on track before all of that. Like I said, I hope he’s here for a good while yet.”
Many would have to agree with the comments that Gough has made as it would appear as though Gerrard has certainly brought back some of the buzz to Ibrox following a rather difficult period of history for the club off the field when they were demoted to the Third Division in 2012 (Independent).
According to an article by BBC Sport following the conclusion of last season, the Light Blues finished the season with a better points tally and their highest finish since the saga seven years ago, whilst they also noted that Rangers had scored more goals and tightened up at the back under his stewardship.
Of course, there are still areas that need work, with their record against the top six sides in the Scottish Premiership being a rather glaring issue for them (BBC), but it would definitely appear as though Gerrard is getting them back on track.
